Education

While education is not a direct responsibility, I believe that the London Assembly has a campaigning role to improve education for Londoners. Londoners pay more tax than other parts of the UK and the standard of education should be better.

Better schools

We must campaign for additional funding to improve the quality of education at all levels in the capital. In particular, we need a to focus on childcare and nursery provision. The first few years are vital in a child's educational attainment.

Improved lifetime learning and training

We must support personal ambitions and the flexibility of London's labour market by making sure that the access to training and further education is enhanced.

Better infrastructure

We must make dramatic improvements in the provision of infrastructure supporting education such as libraries and the internet.

High speed internet connections is a vital part of modern life. We should fund the introduction of WiMAX across capital. It will give every Londoner and visitor free access to the latest wireless service.

Libraries must be transformed, not only by ensuring that the latest books are stocked and available but that the shelves hold new, attractive and relevant books. Many people lack a quiet place to work and study, libraries give this opportunity. We should invest to give Londoner's twenty-first century libraries that will be open seven days a week, from 6am to 10pm.
