Making housing affordable
Helping people live in London is a key challenge for the mayor. Housing in
London will always be expensive relative to other parts of the United
Kingdom. Government needs to recognise this by reducing the level of
taxation on Londoners to give them a greater disposable income to help
meet higher housing costs. It is wrong that Londoners pay more in tax,
get less in services and have higher living costs than those living
elsewhere.
Building more homes
We agree with Shelter, everyone should have access to a suitable,
decent and affordable home. Rather than spending a fortune on the
Olympics we must use the resources to embark on a house building
programme across London.
Helping people own their own homes
Helping people own their homes through schemes such as the "right to
buy" council homes must be supported. The key thing, however, is the
council housing stock must be renewed. As homes are sold, new ones must
be built.
