London has some wonderful parks and leisure facilities but many fall
far short. I will work to give London the very best public amenities.
Rather than spend £1m for each Olympic competitor, we must invest in
parks and leisure for all Londoners to enjoy. We should
undertake a major programme to ensure that decent and free public
lavatories are widely available across the city.
Investing in parks
Parks should be attractive, safe places for all the family to enjoy. Not
only should the basic things be done such as the grass cut and flower
beds installed and renewed, but playgrounds and other facilities should
be of the highest quality. I will make the policing of parks a
priority and ensure that all times officers are present
to provide security.
Better leisure facilities
The standard of sporting and leisure facilities fall far short of what
should be available in a world class city. I believe that we should
learn from the best and ensure that London has similar and ideally
better provision.
Decent and
free public lavatories
The systematic closure of public lavatories is a disgrace. The
availability of clean and free public lavatories is a hallmark of a
civilised city. We must reopen, renovate and commission new
public lavatories as a priority.
